Dr Mary Carroll
Dr Carroll set up the Southampton regional adult cystic fibrosis service in 1994. At that time there were 18 patients. In 1998, when the number of patients had risen to over 50, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust designated Southampton a large centre and Dr Carroll the centre director. There are now 200 patients cared for by Southampton CF centre and the region (south central) has expanded to include the Channel Islands. Dr Carroll was the clinical lead for the service from the start until 2008.
Dr Carroll has a strong research background; having helped developed the technique of nasal ventilation she has applied it for use in cystic fibrosis. She was involved in the discovery that nebulised heparin thins sputum so making it easier to expel. Currently she is involved in a large number of commercial and academic research projects, testing new treatments for people with CF. She has a particular interest and is an international expert in studies using new molecular techniques to better identify the bacteria that cause lung infections.
