Experience
Dr Akester is a consultant physician in acute and general internal medicine and joined the Trust in 2014.
Dr Akester cares for patients staying on our wards with a wide range of acute medical conditions, who have been transferred from the acute medical unit (AMU) or the intensive care unit. She specialises in the diagnosis and management of acutely unwell individuals who have multiple or complex medical problems using a whole person (holistic) and comprehensive approach. As a specialist in general internal medicine, she plays a key role in both delivering care and co-ordinating care from a range of professionals.
Dr Akester led the General Internal Medicine (GIM) service from 2017-2021. During that time GIM became recognised as having a significant footprint within UHSFT, with the development of two dedicated ward bases, matron, junior/consultant expansion and governance framework.
Dr Akester has a strong interest in medical education, mental health and coaching. She is the current Co-Training Programme Director for GIM at NHS England (Wessex). She is an established consultant medical appraiser and educational/clinical supervisor. She teaches on the new Educational/Clinical Supervisors Course at the Deanery and has recently joined the UHS Doctors Development Unit as an associate coach.
Prior to 2017, Dr Akester worked mainly within the acute medicine unit, undertaking a range of clinical and educational roles, including ACCS Acute Medicine Trust lead, AMU education lead and mental health lead.
