Dr Ian Boon

Dr Boon is a consultant clinical oncologist specialising in holistic non-surgical management of head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer.

Training and education

Dr Boon graduated from The University of Manchester School of Medicine in 2012. He completed foundation doctor training at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and core medical training within the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Boon completed clinical oncology specialist training at Leeds cancer centre clinical oncology training scheme and was awarded clinical oncology certificate of completion of training (CCT) by the General Medical Council in 2021. He is a member of the Royal College of Physician and fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Experience

Dr Boon was appointed consultant clinical oncologist at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) in 2021. He offers holistic non-surgical management of head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer. He is a core member of the head and neck multidisciplinary team (MDT) and thyroid cancer MDT. He also delivers radiotherapy for the specialist skin cancer MDT (melanoma).

He is experienced in delivering advanced technical radiotherapy including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), surface guided radiotherapy (SGRT) and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) with focus on improving survival rates and reducing toxicities of treatment. He participates in the weekly UHS head and neck radiotherapy peer review meetings for radiotherapy quality assurance.

Dr Boon offers evidence-based and patient-centred oncology care with systemic anticancer treatments including chemotherapy, novel agents such as immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and recruitment to clinical trials. Dr Boon is an early adopter of cancer genomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) to deliver precision medicine and personalised decision making for patients.

Dr Boon is the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) practitioner license holder at UHS for administration of radioiodine for thyroid cancer.

Research

Dr Boon is research active with interest in cancer genomics and evaluation of artificial intelligence utility within the oncology workflow. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited as reviewer for national and international oncology and radiotherapy journals and grant proposal reviewer panels. He is actively opening and recruiting head and neck patients to national and international clinical trials.

Dr Boon contributes to regional and national roles in professional bodies and committees. He is a Human Research Agency (HRA) certified Clinical Radiation Expert (CRE) reviewer and screens early radiotherapy research proposals. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) early career researchers forum and member of The Royal College of Radiologist Clinical Oncology Artificial Intelligence advisory group. Dr Boon offers professional advisory role to the medical technologies advisory committee, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and is a professional expert to NICE Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme (MTEP) to develop guidance on artificial intelligence (AI) contouring tools for radiotherapy.
