Dr Claudio Ruffmann

Training and education
Dr Ruffmann graduated in medicine (1995 to 2003, Universita’ Statale di Milano-Bicocca) and subsequently trained in neurology (2006 to 11, Univerista’ Statale di Milano-Bicocca) in Milan, Italy.
Before coming to the UK, he practiced neurology in Italy. There, he developed a sub-specialty interest in Parkinson’s disease and related conditions, such as multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
Experience
Dr Ruffmann is a consultant in neurology who joined the Trust in 2016.
He has extensive experience in the management of complex Parkinson’s disease, including patients treated with infusion therapies and DBS.
He provides a neurology service and Parkinson’s disease specialist clinics at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH) and Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH). He also holds a Parkinson’s disease clinic at University Hospital Southampton.
Research
Dr Ruffmann has pursued research in the field of Parkinson’s disease. He has been a research fellow at Imperial College London, where he was funded by Parkinson’s UK to investigate the neuropathology of Parkinson’s disease.
He was then a research fellow at the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre. He obtained a PhD from the University of Oxford (2018), exploring the gut-brain axis in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease.
