Experience
Dr Rutter joined the Trust as a consultant in gastroenterology and intestinal failure in May 2016.
Dr Rutter is one of four physicians who run the Southampton nutrition support and intestinal failure service. Southampton is a regional referral centre for patients with complex intestinal disease who require artificial nutrition and hydration support in the form of tube or intravenous feeding (administered into a vein).
Dr Rutter looks after patients with a range of gastroenterological disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings. She performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies (tests to examine the inside of the body using a thin tube with a camera). This includes the insertion of feeding tubes.
Dr Rutter is an honorary visiting specialist in multivisceral (multi-organ) transplantation at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and works closely with teams in Cambridge and Oxford to look after patients who are being assessed for, or who have undergone, intestinal transplant. She attends the monthly National Adult Small Intestinal Transplant forum (NASIT), at which patients being considered for intestinal transplant are discussed.
Dr Rutter leads the gatroenterology department lead at UHS. She holds a postgraduate certificate in medical education and is involved in local and national teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Rutter is the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) workforce lead and is a past chair of the BSG trainees section.
Dr Rutter is involved in the recruitment of patients into trials in clinical nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Her clinical research interests are in the progression of intestinal failure associated liver disease and renal impairment post intestinal transplant.
