Dr Bernard Stacey

Dr Stacey has been a consultant in the Trust since 2003. His specialty is gastroenterology.

After graduating from Bristol University in 1990, Dr Stacey served in the Royal Army Medical Corps for seven years. During that time, he completed tours of duty in the former Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland. He then did his specialist training in the Wessex area before embarking on his research and then being appointed as a consultant in Southampton.

Experience

Dr Stacey has been a consultant in the Trust since 2003. His specialty is gastroenterology and he sees patients with conditions of both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts. His patients are referred to him by GPs and other consultants, in the NHS and privately. Symptoms he often sees include:

  • indigestion
  • heartburn
  • swallowing problems
  • non-cardiac chest pain
  • iron deficiency anaemia
  • weight loss
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhoea
  • rectal bleeding.

Dr Stacey was responsible for creating and running the iron deficiency anaemia and oesophageal botox services. 

He's also highly experienced in endoscopy (procedures where an endoscope, a thin tube with a camera attached, is used to look inside of the body). You may be referred to him for:

  • gastroscopy (viewing the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine with an endoscope)
  • colonoscopy (viewing the bowel with an endoscope)
  • flexible sigmoidoscopy (viewing the rectum and lower colon with an endoscope)
  • endoscopic ultrasound (an ultrasound scan using an endoscope).

Dr Stacey was the lead consultant for endoscopy here at UHS for six years. He played an important role in the development on the endoscopic ultrasound service.

Personal interests

In his spare time, Dr Stacey writes novels, short stories and poetry. In 2015, he published a book of hospital themed poems called Iron Fist in Velvet Glove to raise money for the gastrointestinal ward. 

Key achievements

  • Introducing endoscopic ultrasound to Southampton.
  • Creating the iron deficiency and oesophageal botox service.
  • Leading the endoscopy unit to five years' JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accreditation as clinical lead in 2007.
