Dr Alice Leahy
BA, MBBS, FRCPCH, MSc Cert Med Ed
Training and education
Dr Leahy trained in general paediatrics, before taking 18 months of unpaid leave to go and train in paediatric rheumatology in specialist centres around the UK. She has more recently trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound, enabling the Trust to provide an in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound service.
Current role
As a consultant paediatric rheumatologist, Dr Leahy provides a local and regional service for children with chronic arthritis and other autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal disorders.
She also leads a regional paediatric rheumatology network to try to ensure that children receive an optimum specialist service across Wessex and the South coast.
Awards and prizes
The children's rheumatology service won the WellChild Award 2012 for Best Medical Team, nominated by several families the service works with. This was presented by Prince Harry in London in September 2012.
Research
The children's rheumatology service is actively recruiting patients to a number of national studies, and aims to consider all its patients with juvenile arthritis for enrolment wherever suitable. The service is one of the leading centres nationally for recruiting to a study looking at treatment for JIA uveitis (sight-threatening eye inflammation associated with childhood arthritis).
