Dr Alex King

Dr Alex King has been a consultant at University Hospital Southampton since 2014. He is currently the lead clinician for the Southampton ablation service and previously held the position of lead oncology radiologist. With approximately 15 years of specialist experience in thermal ablation, Dr King focuses on delivering advanced interventional oncology alongside high-precision diagnostic support.
Clinical experience
Dr King’s clinical practice is centred on image-guided tumour ablation, with a particular emphasis on providing minimally invasive treatments for complex oncological presentations.
- Renal cryoablation: He possesses extensive experience in CT-guided renal cryoablation, maintaining a specialist interest in managing complex and challenging cases, including patients with inheritable conditions and those with a solitary kidney.
- Liver ablation and software development: He is highly proficient in percutaneous liver microwave ablation using fusion imaging. This clinical work is supported by a track record in the strategic development and consultation of ablation planning and monitoring software with industry partners.
- MRI-guided therapy: Dr King is currently the sole practitioner in the United Kingdom performing MRI-guided cryoablation, offering a unique technical perspective on precision-guided therapy.
- MDT strategic support: He provides expert radiological interpretation for urological and oncological cases, directly influencing complex decision-making within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
Research and education
Dr King is committed to progressing the field of interventional oncology through international research and the training of consultant peers.
- International speaker portfolio: He is routinely invited to present clinical data and technical advances at leading global conferences, including SIO, CIRSE, EAU, and ECIO.
- Professional education and proctoring: Dr King serves as a UK proctor for renal ablation, providing specialist technical guidance and training for consultants who are establishing new ablation programmes. He is also a regular faculty member for international conference workshops and industry-based training sessions.
- International registry leadership: He is a core contributor and researcher for the European Registry for Renal Cryoablation (EuRECA), which focuses on advancing data-driven clinical standards for the procedure.
- Multi-centre clinical trials: He provides expert radiological analysis and procedural input for major oncological trials.
