Experience

Prof Deakin took on the role of consultant in cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care at the Trust in October 1999. He is also honorary professor of resuscitation and pre-hospital emergency medicine at the University of Southampton, and has held this role since August 2012.

Prof Deakin's other roles include

  • Honorary chair, faculty of health and medical sciences, University of Surrey, since January 2012.
  • Assistant medical director, South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust, since June 2008.
  • Honorary civilian consultant adviser in pre-hospital emergency care to the British Army, since June 2002.
  • Clinical lead, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

  • Honorary chair, professor of resuscitation and pre-hospital emergency medicine, University of Southampton, since August 2012.
  • Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, 2007. As chair of the Hampshire division of the British Association for Immediate Care, this was awarded for charitable work supporting South Central Ambulance Service at serious pre-hospital incidents, in “…recognition of the vital role played by … ‘unsung heroes’ of the voluntary and community world”. 
  • British Association for Immediate Care National Award, 2009. This was a personal award for services to pre-hospital care.
  • Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, 2002, awarded for voluntary medical work with Hampshire and London ambulance services, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
  • Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2012, for voluntary medical work with Hampshire and London ambulance services, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. 

Research

Prof Deakin's main research interests are in resuscitation, major trauma and pre-hospital care.

His publications to date include two books, 31 books chapters, and 114 peer reviewed papers. Prof Deakin has also generated a total grant income of £5,816,389.
