Experience

Assoc. Prof. Mahmoudi is a consultant cardiologist who specialises in coronary intervention. He sees patients with a range of cardiological problems, including:

  • heart attack
  • chest pain
  • high blood pressure
  • excessive muscularity of the heart (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)
  • heart complications that arise as a result of cancer treatment.

Awards and prizes

  • Edith Newling Prize - Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine
  • Raymond & Beverly Sackler Award - University of Cambridge
  • British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship - University of Cambridge

Research

Assoc. Prof. Mahmoudi’s clinical interests include:

  • using imaging techniques like intravascular ultrasound and optimal coherent tomography to assess coronary atheroma (a build-up of fatty deposits on the arteries around the heart)
  • using physiological tools like pressure wires to understand how coronary atheroma can affect the dynamics of blood flow (haemodynamics)
  • identifying patients that might be at risk of developing cardiac toxicity (damage to the heart from harmful chemicals) after having cancer treatment.

Assoc. Prof. Mahmoudi also has an interest in the development of novel biomarkers (naturally occurring characteristics that can be used to identity disease) that help identify patients at risk of developing coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
