BM MRCPCH
Training and education
Dr Abay qualified in Southampton and undertook paediatric training in the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, Melbourne Children’s Hospital, Australia, and Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool before heading back to Wessex as a specialist registrar.
Experience
Dr Abay has worked for University Hospital Southampton since April 2003. She has a solid foundation in general paediatrics, both acutely and in outpatients. Her particular interests are respiratory disease such as asthma, and allergy management at secondary care level. Dr Abay has good links with the emergency department and primary care specialist asthma nurses, and has lung function, skin prick testing, venesection and epipen training available in all her clinics.
Key achievements
Dr Abay is proud to have set up the 24-hour paediatric assessment unit, improving the child and family’s experience when acutely unwell. Better bed use has also meant less closure of the paediatric unit.
Dr Abay has been a college tutor for five years, supporting junior doctors and their training needs. She also has an active role with final year students as joint final year co-ordinator, which is boosted by her own insight from her time in Southampton as a student.
