Services at Southampton General Hospital

Main x-ray

Our main x-ray service at Southampton General Hospital is open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). We carry out x-ray and fluoroscopy (a continuous x-ray, like an x-ray film) imaging procedures for adult outpatients, inpatients and people referred by their GP.

We have five general x-ray rooms, a specialist dental imaging room, two fluoroscopy rooms and a fleet of mobile x-ray machines to use out of the department.

Emergency x-ray

The emergency x-ray department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (including bank holidays), providing imaging for the emergency department and theatres.

We have three trauma x-ray rooms, a specialist dental imaging room, a fleet of mobile image intensifier machines for imaging in theatres, and a CT scanner.

Interventional radiology

Open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays), we also provide an emergency on call service. We carry out highly complex and specialised imaging procedures and have two interventional imaging labs and a hybrid theatre.

Services at Royal South Hants

We have four general x-ray rooms and mainly see outpatients and GP referrals.

Our satellite department at the Royal South Hants is open from 8am to 6pm for X-ray appointments and outpatient clinics, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). We offer a walk in service (no appointment required) for chest X-ray referrals between the hours of 09:00-16:30 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

Meet the team

We have a large team of radiographers, radiologists, radiography assistant practitioners, radiography department assistants, nurses and administrative staff who work across main x-ray, emergency radiology, interventional radiology and Royal South Hants x-ray.

Our department manager and lead superintendent radiographer is Emily Heddon supported by:
