Fit for surgery school
What is fit for surgery school?
Fit for surgery school is an online education seminar for patients where surgery may be considered as a treatment option. It’s available to anyone who is having surgery at UHS that is not a day case (when you return home on the same day as your surgery).
The online seminar is delivered by the perioperative care team which includes nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals. It's held live so that you can ask questions and get involved.
The seminar lasts for approximately an hour and a half, with around 10 patients attending each session. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend.
What is covered in the online seminar?
The session will provide you with valuable information that will help you prepare for treatment options such as surgery.
We will cover the following topics:
- The importance of getting fit for surgery (the risks of surgery)
- Making changes to your lifestyle
- Exercise (increasing exercise levels prior to surgery)
- Nutrition (diet)
- Mindfulness (mental wellbeing)
- Behaviours (smoking and alcohol cessation)
- Preparing for surgery (what to expect during your stay, what to bring to hospital, preparing your home for when you are discharged)
- Recovery after surgery (mouth care, position in bed, walking, rest, breathing exercises, managing pain, nutrition, going home).
