Fetal medicine unit
We're the regional centre for fetal medicine, looking after parents and babies from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and even the Falkland Islands.
Our team might look after you if you have a baby with a suspected or confirmed abnormality. This could be a structural difference (for example, a cleft lip, heart defect or kidney problems), or growth problems.
We may also see you if you have had a baby with abnormalities or have a family history of genetic problems. We perform scans and other tests to tell us more about your baby's problem so that we can plan the right care for you and your baby for the rest of your pregnancy. We work closely with other teams such as neonatologists, paediatric cardiologists and paediatric surgeons who can help care for your baby before and after delivery. Occasionally, we might offer treatment before your baby is born.
We have an important role as a teaching unit for specialists in training, midwives, sonographers and medical students, and we are also active in research.
