Research (neurovascular service)
The neurovascular service at University Hospital Southampton is home to the UK’s largest dedicated research team investigating intracranial aneurysms and subarachnoid haemorrhage. Our team is at the forefront of clinical research and innovation, working to transform outcomes for patients affected by these complex conditions.
There are two main themes to our research:
- Preventing rupture of brain aneurysms that have been discovered on scans.
- Improving the recovery of patients who have suffered a brain haemorrhage from a ruptured brain aneurysm.
The first of these themes is focussed on the ROAR Study (Risk of Aneurysm Rupture study). This is the largest study of its kind focused on the management of patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms. This groundbreaking research aims to provide robust evidence to guide treatment decisions and reduce the risk of rupture. Visit the ROAR study website to find out more.
Our second theme studies how blood causes injury to the brain and tests new treatments to prevent this. To enable larger more impactful studies we have set up the HATCH Consortium, an international collaborative network of leading investigators from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Together, we are pooling our global expertise and resources with the shared goal of improving the lives of patients following brain haemorrhage. Find out more on the HATCH Consortium page on the University of Southampton website.
