Neuropsychology

We talk to people, give paper and pencil quizzes and computer-based tests that help us to understand changes in different abilities.

Some of the areas we investigate include:

Cognitive

  • thinking
  • concentrating
  • remembering
  • talking
  • acting
  • planning and organising
  • recognising people, places and things

Social behaviour

  • understanding other people and reacting to them
  • knowing when to start and stop different types of activity

Mood and feelings

  • being worried
  • feeling under pressure or experiencing distress
  • fatigue and tiredness

We aim to measure different patterns of strengths and weaknesses that may reflect alterations in brain function. For some people the cause will be a neurological illness or injury. For other people, fatigue, pain, medication, depression or anxiety may be making the greatest contribution to a change in daily life.

We don't have the resources to provide extended therapy or rehabilitation. This type of work is better managed by clinical psychologists and clinical neuropsychologists who can work with patients and their families closer to home, in community teams or rehabilitation.

Research

Our clinical work is complemented by research into better ways of evaluating difficulties with memory, perception, thinking and language. We have strong links with the University of Southampton’s department of psychology and are part of the developed UK Network for Investigating Young Onset Dementia (YoDA). We also have links with Oxford University, the Memory in Epilepsy Group and other research networks.
