The Wessex spinal network was established in 2017. It aims to help define standards, pathways and standard operating procedures (SOPs) aimed at improving access and care for patients presenting with spinal conditions via an elective or emergency care pathway across the whole network by working collaboratively with all key stakeholders within the regions spinal services. This includes clinicians, hospital managers and commissioners as well as patient representatives.

UHS provides 24/7 emergency spinal services for the region and as such acts as the hub for the network. Other partner hospital trusts include Basingstoke, Winchester, Poole and Bournemouth, Dorchester, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Chichester, Salisbury and New Hall.

As well as guiding the organisation of spinal services in the Wessex region, the network has an important role in reviewing and tracking success. This is achieved through a robust clinical governance structure which permits active case discussion and enhances learning through critical case review. The British Spinal Registry www.britishspineregistry.com is a web based database for the collection of data including PROMS (patient reported outcome measures) with the aim of improving patient safety and monitoring the results of spinal surgical interventions.

Wessex spinal network governance and board meetings are usually held on a quarterly basis.
