Vascular services

We're the central hub of the Wessex Vascular Network, working alongside Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We're the dedicated major arterial centre for the south coast central region, seeing all patients from this area who are in need of our service. A specialist vascular team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Wessex Vascular Network is one of the busiest of its kind in the country, providing the full range of vascular interventions with good outcomes.

We work closely with interventional radiology and cardiothoracic surgery colleagues to provide a multidisciplinary approach to problems involving the whole circulation.

To support this work, we have facilities and services including:

  • Advanced nurse practitioners, surgical care practitioners and vascular nurse specialists who support your referral, including helping you to transfer back to your local hospital and home.
  • A hybrid theatre that can offer both open vascular surgery and interventional radiology at the same time.
  • A rapid access vascular clinic for urgent appointments.
  • Access to an on-call vascular surgeon out of hours and at weekends who can be contacted by the surgical teams in Portsmouth and Winchester and on the Isle of Wight.
  • Satellite clinics in Romsey, Lymington and Gosport as well as main outpatient clinics in Winchester, Portsmouth, Newport and Southampton.
  • Rehabilitation with physiotherapy, occupational therapy and re-enablement services.

If you don't need such complex treatment, you can be treated locally. If you live in the Portsmouth area, your pre-operative care and follow-up appointments will be at Portsmouth University Hospital. You can have day surgery (such as for varicose veins) at this site, and outpatient clinics including diabetic foot clinics take place in Portsmouth with close links to the podiatry teams. We are also able to provide these services in Winchester. In addition there are local outpatient clinics in Romsey, Lymington, Oak Park, Gosport and on the Isle of Wight.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening is based at Southampton but provided throughout the region . There is no change to this service.
