Experience

Dr Modi is a consultant interventional radiologist who joined the Trust in 2016.

Interventional radiology is an evolving specialty that's often called ‘minimally invasive' or 'pinhole' surgery. It allows the treatment of a huge range of medical conditions through small incisions using imaging guidance. This kind of surgery reduces the impact on patients' lives and allows a faster return to normal activity.

Dr Modi’s primary passion is interventional oncology. He delivers mainly liver directed treatment for primary or metastatic liver cancer. He plays a key role in the chemoembolization (TACE - delivering beads with chemotherapy into liver arteries) and radioembolisation services (SIRT - delivering particles with radiation into liver arteries), working closely with oncologists, hepatologists and liver surgeons.

He also performs other liver interventions such as percutaneous cholangiography (PTC), with drainage and stenting as well as transhepatic porto systemic shunt (TIPPS) insertion for patients with bleeding varices (varicose veins) or intractable ascites (abnormal fluid in the abdomen).

Dr Modi is heavily involved in gynaecological and urological embolisation. This involves uterine artery embolisation (UAE) for uterine fibroids (benign tumours that develop in the wall of the uterus), prostate artery embolisation (PAE) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign enlargement of the prostate) and varicocele embolisation for varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum).

Other vascular interventions that Dr Modi performs include:

treatment of bleeding caused by trauma
treatment of peripheral vascular disease
treatment of aneurysms of the aorta and peripheral aneurysms
insertion of gastrointestinal feeding tubes
venous (vein) intervention and access
adrenal venous sampling (collecting blood from the adrenal veins).

Dr Modi's work in diagnostic radiology involves the reporting of hepatic biliary, abdominal and vascular imaging using MRI, CT and ultrasound scans.

Research

Dr Modi's research interests include prostate artery embolisation and novel and innovative liver directed therapies for cancer. He's currently co-investigator in several research trials being carried out at UHS. He's also been the author or co-author on numerous publications, presentations and scientific exhibits at national and international interventional radiology conferences.
