Experience
Dr Fernandes is a consultant neurologist (brain doctor) working in Southampton General Hospital, looking after patients from Wessex and the surrounding regions.
He is a general neurologist, meaning he has expertise in diagnosing and looking after patients with any neurological condition, including headache, migraine, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, functional neurological disorder, and many more conditions.
Dr Fernandes specialises in neuro-inflammatory disorders of the brain and spinal cord, including multiple sclerosis (MS). He has a specialist MS clinic, working within the MS team here in Southampton. He also has a specialist interest in other neuro-inflammatory disorders, where the brain/spinal cord is attacked by the immune system by mistake. This includes conditions such as neuro-sarcoidosis, neuro-Behcet’s disease, and similar conditions, which Dr Fernandes looks after in a separate specialist neuro-inflammatory clinic.
During his neurological training in Edinburgh, Dr Fernandes developed a research interest in neuro-inflammatory conditions, and is in the process of working with the University of Southampton to help us understand these conditions better.
