Experience

Dr Konn joined University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust in August 2011 as an SpR and became a consultant clinical neurophysiologist in October 2015.

Dr Konn's duties involve performing and interpreting investigations that record activity from the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. This includes nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), evoked potentials (EPs), and electroencephalography (EEG). He also teaches consultants, junior doctors, medical students, nurses and allied health professionals as well as being nvolved in physiologist workforce planning and training within the department.

Dr Konn's special interests include single-fibre EMG to assess neuromuscular junction dysfunction, prolonged EEG including ambulatory EEG and videotelemetry. He has also gained in-depth knowledge and experience in paediatric and neonatal EEG.

Key achievements

  • Written a chapter on neurophysiology for a neurology textbook.
  • Helped to change the working pattern of physiologists to provide better cover for EEG for in-patients.
  • Assisted in obtaining funding from Health Education Wessex to train a physiologist on a Masters course to then work in the department.

Awards and prizes

  • International federation of clinical neurophysiology Young investigator’s award.
  • British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology Lord Adrian prize.
  • Sir Thomas White scholarship, St. John’s College, Oxford University.

Research

  • Muscle fibre properties in critical illness myopathy.
  • Novel features of EEG to help with prognostication in neonates with brain injury, in collaboration with Southampton University investigating
  • Simultaneous EEG and functional MRI, in collaboration with UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
