Who's who on the unit?
Our team is made up of various people who all work together to provide expert care and support to young people and their families.
Consultants are the senior doctors who are in overall charge of a patient’s care. Along with the other doctors, they work to look after the patients on the unit. Different consultants specialise in different types of cancer, and treatment.
Clinical nurse specialists link with the team to look after patients on the unit. They are often the key workers who coordinate patient care, and act as the main point of contact for patients within the hospital.
Patients on the unit may also get help from dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists or a speech and language therapists during their treatment.
This team is made up of various members of the teenage and young adult cancer care team. They meet weekly to discuss patients at the time of diagnosis, and at other stages of treatment as needed.
All patients under our care are discussed at the meeting, no matter which hospital they are in. The team members are experts in cancer in young people, and together with each patient’s consultant they agree on the most appropriate plan for treatment and care, including where treatment can take place.
This small team is made up of specialist nurses and YLvC social workers all who specialise in working with young people and their families.
They have looked after lots of young people with cancer, and work alongside the other doctors and nurses during and after treatment, offering advice, information and support.
They also organise social activities, that help patients get to know and support other young people who are going through similar experiences.
