Treatment (spinal service)
The Wessex spinal service is not commissioned to accept referrals from GPs. Patients should be referred to their local musculoskeletal service. If you have concerns regarding your back, please contact your GP. Not all referrals will require spinal surgery.
If you have a query about an outpatient appointment, please see our contact us page.
MSK physiotherapy self-referral
If you would like to refer yourself for physiotherapy, you can do this on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare website.
Patients having spinal surgery
The length of time you will be in hospital for depends on the exact nature of your surgery. You should expect to stay in hospital overnight.
On the day of your surgery, you will be admitted to our day of surgery ward. After your operation, you will be admitted to our dedicated spinal ward.
If you are due to have surgery with us, please familiarise yourself with the spinal enhanced recovery programme that we offer. This includes information on your recovery after surgery.
Information about your treatment
The British Association of Surgeons (BASS) has produced booklets on a range of conditions, you can find a list here.
The British Spinal Registry (BSR)
The British Spinal Registry (www.britishspineregistry.com) aims to improve spinal care throughout the UK by encouraging research, good clinical practice and educating patients about spinal problems (available treatments, expectations and quality of life).
BSR is a web-based database for the collection of patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) with the aim of improving patient safety and monitoring the results of spinal surgical interventions.
The Wessex spinal service automatically enrol all patients undergoing spinal surgery to the British Spine Registry (BSR). You will receive an email inviting you to join and complete a short questionnaire. If you do not wish to take part, you can opt out by logging into your BSR account and requesting to withdraw your consent. Alternatively, an opt out form (if you don't want to take part in the BSR) can be found here. We encourage all our patients to participate in the BSR.
